Smart Environments – Exploring Untold Possibilities with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Author: , Date:
Reframing what AI means for businesses, HARMAN is building dynamic environments to elevate businesses and lives.

Taking advantage of human-algorithm collaboration, we recently built the cruise industry’s first voice-activated digital assistant. A customized voice-based assistant with the capability to respond to multilingual guests, allowing them to access cruise-related information easily.

How did we achieve this?

Infusing data collected from various sources and combining it with advanced Machine Learning (ML) and predictive data analytics techniques, we enhanced the onboard guest experience. This has not just led to the development of a single new platform that offers multiple services but has added to the overall cruise experience.

In future, we aim to leverage AI and Machine Learning (ML) to provide phenomenally functional benefits to cruise travelers. From sketching up images of hazards lying in the way and facilitating safe navigation to placing smart mirrors or effective voice-activated touch screens across the vessel.

In the ten years, AI will have made unseen progress than it would have presumably achieved to deliver in fifty years.

Smart crafts will operate via comprehensive onboard AI systems with features such as a virtual concierge which will amp up security onboard (as it governs cameras across a ship) or facial recognition systems that will quickly pick up on passengers’ preferences (spontaneously adjusting the blinds, room temperature, taste in music and much more). Mirrors placed inside the vessel will convert itself into interactive displays, upon a gentle tap, to search for information or watch movies.

HARMAN DTS has already embarked on the path of building AI-driven solutions for cruises where travelers can make use them, online or offline.

Going from the seas to land – AI will be a game changer for engineering and construction industry.

Today, safety devices for buildings can detect and monitor temperature changes, smoke and other hazardous signs to warn before disasters occur. For instance, wireless fire detection systems are capable of raising early warning flags to save million-dollar construction sites from turning into million-dollar debris and hurt people.

By introducing Internet of Things (IoT), predictive analytics and other emerging technologies, the engineering and construction industry will reap the benefits of enhanced early warning systems for disasters and optimize everyday work tasks such as scheduling and preventive maintenance.

Companies will not have to rely on any tools or people’s physical presence on the site. Using real-time cameras and sensors to collect data, AI-powered platforms will perform in-depth analysis to ensure a much safer, cleaner and comfortable residential and workplace in tandem.

AI-led systems built with the capability to learn, adapt and evolve will further the process of how early a system can identify weak spots for developers to work on. In a few years, these next-gen systems will act as the central nervous system of construction sites watching out for potential risks and problems.

Another such sector where AI-powered systems will bring about a major shift is the Oil and Gas industry.

Validating this statement is a market study that says, AI boasts excellent potential for the oil and gas industry and is valued to reach US$2.85 billion by the end of 2022. Currently, North America happens to be the largest market for oil and gas implementing AI closely followed by the Asia Pacific and Europe.

A majority of drilling, as well as production oil wells, are found in remote areas where sending manual labor adds to the onsite operating cost. This can be significantly lowered by employing sensors or IoT to facilitate data collection. A decade ago, AI in the oil and gas industry was limited to advising companies on how to adapt towards preventive measures to fight failure. However, in a changed scenario, advanced sensors, as well as tools fueled by AI, can deliver real-time results, boost efficiency and chart out the best course of action.

Whether it is reducing the cost of finding, extracting, processing and delivering oil or simplifying labor-intensive tasks into the real-time analysis (an example, a unified dashboard that delivers models on exploration drilling and control actions), AI working in conjunction with people will transform the approach to oil and gas exploration and production.

It won’t be too long before emerging technologies will be a dominant force to work with, edging towards innovation.

Moving on to the skies, next-gen flight systems will further the automation of existing operations.

Drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) mainly used for recreation or fun will be extensively employed in intelligence, surveillance, scientific exploration and shipping functions. Drones equipped with video cameras, GPS and embedded chips with processing power will give them the capability to perform complex tasks. For example, if a drone is observing a leak or damage it will immediately produce a report and upload it to the cloud as per the specifications.

In the aviation industry, AI and ML will further the automation of flights and flight systems and will provide highly-structured environments (airports and airspaces) increasing safety. Incorporating predictive modeling will help identify any situation (e.g. insight into scheduling flight arrival and departure, eliminating fraudulent transactions or mechanical issues arising within the craft) that could arise to be problematic and prescribe methods to mitigate them instantly.

An effective range of AI-driven devices will work to line up a comprehensive range of solutions for an optimal in-flight experience. ML advances will bring a range of AI capabilities to the next generation flights, from determining which part of an aircraft requires maintenance to applying intelligent automation to reduce operating costs.

HARMAN has ventured into various fields of AI and emerging tech development, from connected cars to insight-led, IoT applications for healthcare management solutions. But now, we are spearing ahead with the right kind of approach vested in AI and ML, backed strongly by effective analysis, to deliver next-gen solutions.
