The following statistics were shared during HARMAN’s Customer Tech Day in Baoding, China as well as at the GENIVI 13th All Member Meeting, October 20 – 23:

  • There are currently five to 20 flaws per 1,000 lines of code. That calculates that In 100 million lines of code in a car there will be between 500,000 and 2,000,000 flaws.

  • OEM cost savings from OTA Updates will grow from $2.7 billion in 2015 to more than $35 billion in 2022.

  • 2014 was a record year in the automotive industry with more than 52 Million recalls.  60 percent of warranty cost are software, >$1M per major event

Based on this information, it is clear that OEMs need to look at a holistic approach to automotive software management, as echoed in a recent article quoting Roger Lanctot, consultant with Strategy Analytics, ”the time to implement vehicle software updates was yesterday.”
